No Humans Allowed
A common tenet of art is to be appealing. Generally, painters want their paintings to look good, and interactive installation artists are usually concerned with creating interactions in their work that are appealing and pleasing to the interactee. No Humans Allowed is an interactive mechatronic sonic installation artwork that provides a counterbalance to this typical interaction paradigm. The installation features three `mechatronic personalities', which create an uncomfortable, unnervingly hostile environment where they do everything in their power to encourage guests to leave.
Installation Description
Welcome to WaveCave, a gated community like no other. No Humans Allowed brings to life a community of mechatronic
personalities, each with their unique personalities constructed from extruded aluminum, acrylic, ultrasonic
rangefinders, solenoids, DC motors, and LED's. But be warned, this society is xenophobic, and outsiders are not
welcome.
As you explore the exhibit, you'll notice the six mechatronic sound sculptures, each one either hanging from the
grid or resting on the floor. The ultrasonic rangefinders detect your presence, and the community comes alive,
active, and productive. But the moment you get too close, the personalities react, paralyzed by hate and fear or
violently deterring the intruder with loud, abrupt, a-rhythmic noises.
No Humans Allowed shines a light on the danger of xenophobic thinking, a theme that resonates in a world where
divisive rhetoric has become increasingly common. The exhibit challenges visitors to reflect on the consequences of
excluding others and the impact it can have on society's harmony.
Don't miss your chance to experience No Humans Allowed, an exhibit that combines art and technology to convey a
powerful message about the dangers of xenophobia. Enter at your own risk and witness the captivating and
thought-provoking display of mechatronic personalities that will leave you questioning the world around you.
